Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz Investigate CBD Products (Part 2)
Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz Investigate CBD Products
We met at a lab in Los Angeles a few weeks ago to find out what’s exactly in these CBD products. Our teams managed to obtain vials of CBD from several companies claiming our endorsement. We sent them to Dr. Pedram Salenpoor for testing. At the lab, we aimed to discover the real contents of this supposed CBD.
Dr. Salampur welcomed us, showing us around the extensive testing facility for THC, CBD, all cannabinoids, 66 pesticides, and heavy metals. He emphasized that the FDA only regulates CBD in one drug, Epidiolex, for rare childhood seizure disorders. Everything else is unregulated, making it a wild territory.
In the lab, they test for heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic, mercury, lead, pesticides, and mycotoxins. Hemp, being a bioaccumulator, absorbs whatever is in the soil, including harmful substances. These can end up in the final product unless intentionally removed. Dr. Salampur revealed they often find pesticides, heavy metals, and mycotoxins in CBD products. These contaminants are particularly dangerous for immune-compromised individuals, potentially causing serious health issues.
The testing equipment is sophisticated and expensive, similar to what’s used for testing baby formula. Skipping safety steps and using our names fraudulently allows these companies to make profits, as testing is costly. Many times, products don’t even contain the amount of CBD they claim, as CBD is expensive.
One product they tested, claiming to have our endorsement, was unsafe for human consumption, containing lead levels 15 times higher than safe limits and 500 times higher than their detection level. This level of toxicity is alarming, especially since these products are often used continuously. Interestingly, one of the products with high lead content was ironically named ‘Verified’.
